The Ultimate Repairability Challenge                                                               > go to Mistral home page

The idea here is to show the clear fact that whatever you do to the worktops you can always recover the situation with Mistral solid surfacing. Therefore wear and tear over time can be revitalised back to new, even in extreme situations such as this! And because Mistral does not stain, it is therefore deemed to be an incredibly practical and hygienic solution.

In real terms, to take an abused piece like this, through all the grit ranges from 80# up to 1500# and a final polish is roughly 10 minutes per m2.

So a kitchen that is made up of 3 off, 3 metre worktops plus a 2 metre breakfast bar, circa 7.5m2 could be totally transformed in a maximum of 90 minutes and that is taking it from the deep scratches of a brick up to 1500# grit and polish; so if we stop at 400# grit (the recommended level of lustre) the time would be significantly reduced.

The video shows 2 methods of dealing with the scratches; the first is to sand the whole area and the second is just to work on the scratches themselves in small clockwise feather patterns.

The sandpapers used to get it to a 320# grit level are then shown alongside the removal of dust with alcohol wipes before applying an Eagle polish finish.

The final stage is to take it up to 1500# grit. The usual south-north, east-west clockwise pattern is employed to achieve this but also shown is a final clockwise diagonal pattern which is recommended for high gloss finishes especially on the dark colours to assist with the light dispersion from the various sources that may be used in the kitchen.

The video can also be used to show how you would get the reverse side of the worktop to the same finish level as the topside which is what you would do when employing a slab end support on a breakfast bar or peninsular worktop where the reverse can be seen.
